Return of Retro Pop Rock Band, Rooney, at Lee's Palace
Los Angeles retro pop rock band, Rooney, stretched out summer by gracing Toronto on September 18th with their catchy California sounds and memorable hooks. A crowd of faithful fans filled the dance floor of Lee’s Palace, joyously dancing and rocking out to the familiar sounds they grew up with. Rooney evoked welcomed nostalgia by playing a handful of their old, yet infamous songs, while ensuring they showcased their new tunes. With a stage full of neon violet and crimson colours, it was truly a work of art. The smoke machine filled up the venue and with a quick close of the eyes, you were transported back to retro Venice Beach, California, late 90’s.
Selling out world tours with the Strokes, Weezer and more, crafting 4 albums and various EPs; Rooney is a band not new to the music scene. Led by frontman Robert Schwartzman, a successful and notorious artist you might recognize from his life works as a composer for various films (Palo Alto, The Virgin Suicides), or his heartthrob role as a badass rocker in The Princess Diaries.
If you are a millennial, chances are, most of your indie rock and pop repertoire is thanks to a show everyone admittedly loved, The OC. The series showcased unique up-and-coming indie and alternative bands that were new to the music scene, and Rooney became an all-time favourite. Their music fit in so well, that they even had an episode dedicated to a live concert of theirs. Though Christmakkuh is quickly approaching, Rooney grew to offer so much more than their kickstart on the popular teen show.
The band’s music has kept up with their retro pop classic sound that we know and love, yet they continue to grow in versatile ways. Rooney played new songs and old, pleasing the crowd with their carefully crafted sound, while demonstrating their new growth as a band. The band put on a captivating show for a dedicated audience, and sparked guilt-free excitement when they finished the night off with their two biggest hits, “When Did Your Heart Go Missin’?” and “I’m Shakin’”. Toronto was left feeling grateful for what they had just witnessed on that quirky Lee's Palace stage that Tuesday night. If you ever catch yourself in town while Rooney is around, be sure to check them out - as it is truly a show you do not want to miss!
