EDEN: A Dynamic Getaway

It’s been said that nobody has the gift of music quite like the Irish, and so far we’ve never found a reason to doubt that saying. 22-year old Dubliner, Jonathan Ng, was yet another testament to the emerald isle. Jonathan, professionally known as “EDEN,” graced Toronto with his alternative and dreamy music at The Danforth Music Hall on March 28th. I had high expectations for this show, having spent the last month getting lost in EDEN’s beautiful falsettos and catchy melodies. The show opened with a layer of smoke falling upon the stage, as the alluring track “wrong” started to fill the concert hall with intensity and curiosity. In an instant, we all knew we were in for an extraordinarily special concert. The smooth and eerie transition into “take care” flowed the way it was clearly intended to, as the vibrant and dynamic light show came to stage. It’s hard to talk about EDEN’s show without mentioning Jonathan’s humble stage presence. Rather than being the centre of attention, he encouraged his music to captivate the audience... and that it did. Jonathan didn’t speak much, other than to introduce his band members, and to thank the audience.

I will note, EDEN tickets should come with an advisory, because you’re truly signing up a concert that will evoke a roller coaster of emotions. Whether you’re dancing to the upbeat and energetic track rock + roll” or getting lost in the delicately powerful “wonder,” it’s safe to say that your sentiments will be heightened. I have to give some credit to EDEN’s lighting crew, as it truly was a work of art. Jonathan was essentially a silhouette the entire time (again, proving his modesty), as he let his artwork be the performer. The way the lights complimented each song deeply enhanced the overall experience for enchanted audience members. If you ever get the chance to see EDEN live in concert, I highly recommend heading to the back of the venue near the end of the concert, so you can appreciate the full dream of a light-show, and experience EDEN’s music come to life, the way it was intended.
