On a beautiful June evening, Peach Pit and Briston Maroney brought their co-headlining Long Hair, Long Life Tour to Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park. It couldn’t have been a better day for a concert in the park, with the sun shining and fans lying on their blankets, enjoying the backdrop of the lake. Not to mention, it being a special hometown show for the boys in Peach Pit, with friends and family in the crowd.
Opening the show was Bnny, an American indie rock band from Chicago. The band gave a reflective performance that gently set the mood. Their hazy, laid-back sound gave the audience time to find their spots on the grass, get comfortable, and ease into the evening. From a familiar riff, the fans caught on to the band entering into a cover of Weezer’s “Undone - The Sweater Song”. “This is our first time in Vancouver, it's gorgeous, I can’t believe you guys live like this,” said front woman Jessica Viscuis.
Next up was Briston Maroney, who brought the energy to the crowd. He opened with “Real Good Swimmer”, off his newest album, JIMMY, which had a rock and roll tone, getting the fans at the front dancing and jamming out to the upbeat tune. Maroney and his band had a great stage presence, with him getting the crowd involved and cracking jokes with the audience between songs.
Midway through the set, crickets and a fire crackling could be heard as the singer came back on stage with an acoustic guitar. It was a special moment as touring Peach Pit member Dougal McLean joined the band, playing violin on the song “Land of Light”.
It was a well-balanced set as Maroney performed a good mix of new songs from JIMMY, but didn't forget about some of the fan favourites. Maroney closed the set with “Freakin’ Out On the Interstate, with fans singing every word back at him.
As Peach Pit took to the stage, it was immediately met with such an outpouring of applause that it was clear the night was going to be something special. The band is touring in support of their new album Magpie. The album showcases introspective songwriting, showcasing the evolution of the band’s sound since their debut in 2016. They opened with a hard-hitting snippet of Black Sabbath's “War Pigs” before diving into the title track “Magpie.”
The set was filled with a lot of their older material, which had the crowd dancing to their favourite songs like “Shampoo Bottles”, “Alrighty Aphrodite”, “Drop the Guillotine, and “Techno Show”. Those wishing to hear the sounds of their new album may have been disappointed as only three songs were put into the set.
Although it was an almost sold-out park, Peach Pit made the crowd feel like they were seeing the band in a small, intimate club. Lead singer Neil Smith talked about humble beginnings at the Railway Club in Vancouver with 30 people, and it being “really special to be home again and play such a big crowd.”
As the night was coming to a close, the band came back on to perform “Peach Pit”, acoustically by Neil and “Tommy’s Party” with Neil and Peter’s dads both on harmonica. It was a truly sweet moment as the band couldn't help but crack a smile, and it was a great send-off to the night.
Burnaby gave Peach Pit a warm welcome back to the city they know best. It was beautiful with the outpouring of applause and cheers as the members left the stage, the love the city has for the band. It’s brilliant to see the band seemingly gaining more success internationally, every year, and fans are excited to see what's next for the local boys.
