MATT AND KIM: Sixth Studio Album and Tour

After 14 years of chart-topping success, today is the day American duo, “Matt and Kim” release their SIXTH studio album via FABER Label, “ALMOST EVERYDAY”. The eccentric and captivating couple are back on tour after a year-long hiatus while Kim was recovering from an on-stage injury. We had the pleasure of chatting with Matt about their new album and their upcoming headlining gig in Toronto. Lyrically darker and more personal, fans can expect this album to maintain Matt and Kim’s energetic and upbeat alternative sound, while getting a closer look into the trials and tribulations they endured while Kim was off recovering from a surgery due to an onstage injury last year.

Having already released 5 studio albums, we wanted to know a bit more about how their new album, “ALMOST EVERYDAY”, differs from their previous work fans have known for so long and continue to love. “I think something about this album feels different. It was written from a different place. It was written from a fucked up tough year… from something luckily me and Kim have never had, and for better or for worse, there is definitely inspiration for our music that has come out of tough times. We were able to put that into this, and in that way I think it feels just more personal and honest. Not to say other songs were dishonest, but a level of honesty and personal-ness, which is not a word - i don’t know the right word - that comes out of it, you know?” explained Matt. It’s no surprise that fans can expect Matt & Kim’s new cathartic music to be still as catchy and foot-tapping as ever. “Music is therapy. I mean, even your audience are therapists, like just getting this shit off your chest”.

Matt & Kim are currently sharing their unique and distinctive music while on tour throughout North America with one of our favourite bands, Tokyo Police Club. Curious about their connection to the Canadians, we inquired about some of the amazing artists they featured on the new album. “Well for us, our music has always been so much about our live shows... it’s not just me and my stupid voice. It’s like all these people singing and how it comes together and the energy that it creates, so we knew we wanted to put more voices on this record, and then we thought 'how about we just hit up friends of ours who are musicians and see if any of them are willing to do it,' and surprisingly every one of them were willing, even those names like Santigold, SWMRS, Mark Hoppus, and Kevin from Walk the Moon and then like Clairo, who we’ve known for since she was little and is now having a real moment, and then Kevin Morby who i’m a huge fan of, and Tokyo Police Club - Canadians we love!” Having a relationship with so many brilliant artists, we wondered if there was anyone they haven’t collaborated with yet that they’d like feature. “I’m such a huge Vince Staples fan, I think that he takes hip hop and really pushes it forward for what he does and thinks outside the box. I think if it was Kim, she would probably say TI because she just loves TI.” Jokingly, we just needed to know if they would call themselves “Matt and Kim and TI,” or “TI and Matt and Kim,” or “Matt and TI and Kim,” in which Matt stated, “it would probably just be “Kim and TI, and Forget Matt… Just Leave Matt at Home.” We have no doubt that TI and Kim would be a great duo, but Matt & Kim are an exceptional force that we aren’t willing to risk ever getting rid of.

Complimenting their musical accomplishments, this dynamic couple has also achieved over 50 million views on YouTube. Whether it's their innovative and award winning music videos, or mega-entertaining and wacky vlog, "Matt and Kim Show Ya Stuff", fans are guaranteed to be entertained. Allowing the public a glimpse into their personal life just proves how humble and unique this special duo is. "We started vlogging maybe a year and a half ago, and there's just this connection that people have to other people, that I don't think necessarily does what music does. We wanted to kind of put ourselves out there when we were off the road and make that human connection". Their videos certainly do mimic their sound, in that it upholds the fun and entertaining style that Matt & Kim are known for. Matt explained, "Well, I always say we take what we do very seriously, but we don't take ourselves very seriously, it's a great way to live your life".
