Hollow Coves Brings a Little Australian Warmth to Toronto - Oct 9th @ The Rivoli

Hollow Coves is no stranger to the indie music scene in Toronto. After all, both Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson have spent quite some time living in the creative Southern Ontario city. The Aussie boys visited Toronto earlier this year in April, and we knew they’d be back after witnessing the captivated crowd’s enchantment. Last night’s show at the Rivoli was no exception. Fans were greeted by another fellow Aussie, Hein Cooper, as he woo-ed the crowd with his beautiful falsettos and impressive guitar skills before the much-anticipated headliners took the stage.

The Rivoli was the perfect venue for the legendary duo, as the roof twinkled with lights to fill the room of starry-eyed fans. Playing crowd-pleasers like “Coastline” and “Home”, the audience was mesmerized instantly. Since the band only has one official EP release, “Wanderlust”, the crowd was lucky enough to hear heaps of new and unreleased songs. Ryan explained the inspiration behind one of their new songs, “Anew”; a song they wrote after receiving multiple messages from adorned fans confessing how their music has helped them through depression and/or suicidal thoughts. The boy’s genuine passion and earnest sincerity shows how strongly their music speaks to their listeners. It’s safe to say that both Ryan and Matt have a special way of expressing themselves through their music, which allows for a special and deep connection to their audience.

Hollow Coves music is often described as the soundtrack to a travellers soul, which couldn’t be more accurate. Their passion for travel and observing the world is evident through their words which evoke a special curiosity and lust for adventure. The boys continued to inspire their fans as they spoke about a time in Norway, where they had the option to stay indoors, but rather chose to get out of their comfort zone by climbing a mountain. The way Ryan described climbing a mountain as the sun was setting aligned with a common theme throughout their music - one that pushes you to get out and experience life for everything that it has to offer.

Nearing the end of the show, the duo performed a song that we had been eager to hear since they played it last April - “Adrift.” The song starts out immediately pleasant, as it maintains the beautiful earthy sound the band is notorious for, then develops into a passionate build-up of acoustic magic - which I couldn’t help but imagine as symbolism for the success of Hollow Coves in their music career thus far. It’s been wonderful to follow along the journey of two Aussie lads, Matt and Ryan, as they embark on their expedition to success, as the beautifully talented and inspiring, Hollow Coves.

If you have the chance, be sure to catch Hollow Coves at a show near you (you will not regret it!). You can find specific tour dates and live shows here: https://www.hollowcoves.com/live
