The Hives at the Rickshaw

After an 11-year hiatus, The Hives came back from the grave, bringing their ‘The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons’ tour to the Rickshaw Theatre on the corner of Hastings and Main St. The anticipation from the crowd was palpable as ‘The Aubreys’ and ‘Kate Clover’ perfectly foreshadowed the energy of what was to come.

They opened the show dramatically with a blast of the third movement of ‘Piano Sonata No. 2’, transitioning shortly after to their hit song off their latest album, ‘Bogus Operandi.’ The setlist featured songs across their 30-year discography, yet somehow from the first word that came out of Howlin’ Pelle’s mouth, the entire crowd was still found screaming the lyrics to every song without any hesitation.

Pelle utilized the whole stage, jumping around, tossing his microphone and climbing onto almost anything he could get to. He proved to be a true showman that night, keeping the crowd engaged, chanting different catchphrases, and interacting with fans around the whole venue. This was undoubtedly an unforgettable night and imprinted a lasting impression on Vancouver.
